Confirmation Bias in Applied Thermodynamics & Mining
Galileo Galilei is a
physician and astronomer famous for his heliocentrism theory. Behind his
phenomenal and science-contributing theory, he suffered mistreatment and had to
live in jail until he passed away in jail. His observation supports Nicolas Copernicus’s
theory that says the earth is round. He then observes that it is not the sun
that is moving around the earth but it is the earth that moves around the sun.
Therefore, the sun is the center of the galaxy and the earth is not. His idea
was greatly opposed by the church as they believe that the earth is the center
of everything. As a result, they prisoned Galileo as well as made his life
difficult before they caught him.
Ignas Semmelweis was one of
the unfortunate scientists who got rejected for his idea of sanitation. When he
saw that the disease spread quickly, he summarized that it was because the
medics did not wash their hand and therefore the action leads to the spreading of
germs.
Michael Servetus is important
as he is the one who discovered pulmonary circulation. His experiment has proven
successful and contributed a lot to basic science. But at the time he wrote the
book, he also faced problems because of his idea of reforming
Christianity. He escaped the Catholic judgment but later got prosecuted by
the Protestant church. They arrested Servetus, tortured him, and even burned
him along with his work thinking of him as a sinful man with a crazy idea. The
remained work of his was the one proving how important his discovery is.
Albert Einstein is really famous for his theory of relativity but he sent himself to the United States for a reason. His work and his belief made the right-wing Jews of German society despise him. The people of the society tried to take his post in Berlin and almost make him expelled from the Prussian Academy of Science. Moreover, they burned the work and books of his. Seeing the animosity of his own country, Albert Einstein sought refuge in the United States and never come back to Germany. He also alarmed the president of the United States at that time, Frank Roosevelt, about the atomic weapon Germany was developing.
Some Other scientists who met unfortunate fates for their ideas are Alan Turing, William Harvey, Gregor Mendel, William B. Coley, Barry Marshall, Santiago Ramon, Jack Kevorkian, Timothy Leary.
