ABSTRACT OF THE BOOK - GREEN & ECO-FRIENDLY EXPLOSIVES

The use of explosives is one of the most preferred means to excavate and mine resources. The most common explosives used for mining are nitrate-based. These nitrate-based explosives have their advantages and disadvantages. One of the disadvantages is emissions of pollutants like nitrogen oxides. Another disadvantage is its limitations in fiery blast holes. So the inherent desires of the mining industry are for the availability of a suitable explosive that will be free from these disadvantages. This book has addressed these subjects. Green and eco-friendly explosives are an answer to the problems on pollution and operational aspects. This booklet is on concepts and findings on some of the parameters of Green and Eco Friendly explosives. The book will be a quick read, and it will provide mining professionals and friends of the earth with the most desired products, namely the GREENEX, and ECOFREX. MINING WITH GREEN EXPLOSIVES

In the microcosm of the mining and rock blasting the question similarly by many professionals in the field of earthmoving is – can mining be done effectively with green materials? The answer to this question to a large extent is – Yes, explosives can be made (i) nitrate-free, (ii) lead-free, (iii) eco friendly, and (iv) oxides-of-nitrogen free.    The prerequisites are to find out (a) nitrate-free oxidizers, and then go into the introduction of (b) fuels from Agri origin.    We have undertaken the development of this product. The theoretical parts in respect to (a) material selection, and (b) thermochemistry through simulation model GPeng are in good progress. We are hopeful of coming out of at least one eco-friendly product within one year time.

SOME GEL TYPES WITH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE

Image
Making a gel of good structure, stability, and shelf life is a combination of a selection of the right materials in the right proportions, and the skill of making it with the right kinds of process types of equipment.  Unlike water & natural polysaccharides combinations, HP poses a challenge to get compatible with Rheology modifiers. The corrosiveness of HP to natural polysaccharides makes a big constraint in getting stable gels.  In our attempt to make gels of good shelf life with Hydrogen Peroxide (HP), we have carried out several experiments. The gels types achieved have very interesting structures. While we are yet to finalize the precise percentages of Water, HP, and the Rheology modifier it is thought nice to share some of the gel types:

THE GEL STRUCTURE & SPECIFICATIONS OF GUAR GUM

A couple of days back I wrote about - “The “r” Factor between the shelf life and gel structure”, and I am happy to note some curiosity by some professionals on the subject. This communication is to tell about one of the best specifications for GG for use in watergel and slurry explosives, in particular.

The “r” Factor between the shelf life and gel structure

The shelflife of watergel slurry explosive depends primarily on the structure of the gel developed through hydration and aeration of the polysaccharides with the aqueous solutions of the oxidizer (s).
